The Arc de Triomphe

There are certain monuments in Paris that are part of the collective French consciousness, because they each symbolize at once France and Paris, and also because they are linked to all of the important political, historic and even athletic events of this country.
Among these great monuments, I have therefore decided to dwell on just one: the Arc de Triomphe.
Located only a short walk from the Hôtel Mac Mahon in the 17th arrondissement of Paris, this 55-metre-tall and 45-metre-wide “monster” was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon I and completed in 1806. It is one of the most striking symbols of French history, especially since 1923 when the flame was first lit over the tomb of the unknown soldier.
In addition to its historic importance, the Arc de Triomphe is strategically located along the axis linking the Louvre with the Grande Arche of La Défense and today constitutes the link between the old and the new Paris. › Continue reading
