The Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain was created in 1984 by Alain-Dominique Perrin. First located in Jouy en Josas, the foundation moved to Paris at 261, Boulevard Raspail in 1994. Cranach and his time, at the Musee du Luxembourg

Friday, February 11th, 2011 | Main events | No Comments

cranaghAfter several months of work, the Luxembourg Museum has finally reopened its doors! Since February 9, the museum new spaces designed by architects Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines (the ones who recently designed the Pompidou Centre in Metz), is featuring a major exhibition about Lucas Cranach the Elder.

Little known to the French public, this great painter of the Germanic Renaissance has actually deeply marked the history of art by his very personal manner: subtile portaits, nudes and landscapes richly detailed, and often tinged with religious symbolism.

If the influence of Dürer as well as the Flemish and Italian painters of the Renaissance appears in his work as an evidence, Cranach the Elder was a staunch supporter of the Reformation and contributed to the dissemination of Protestant iconography through Europe.
His portraits and female nudes exude a special beauty, far from the aesthetic values espoused at the time by the great masters of painting and sculpture.

But if his name reminds you something, it’s also because Cranach made headlines this winter! An exceptional appeal for donations has been actually launched in past few months  by the Louvre Museum in order to raise the lacking million euros to acquire this masterpiece. › Continue reading

Crime and punishement at the Musée d’Orsay

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010 | Main events, Uncategorized | No Comments

gericault_etudepiedsmains_crimesetchatimentsParricides, infanticides, crucifixions, beheadings: the imagination of artists is populated with murders and bloody crimes! Look at the paintings in Museums: more than half of the works are devoted to them. Why is man killing? Can a man who killed be killed at his turn? These ancestral questions are at the heart of the current exhibition of the Musée d’Orsay, to see in Paris until June 27.

After the exhibitions L’Ame au corps and Melancholy, the academician and curator Jean Clair explores the dark side of human psyche again. Crimes et châtiments is a multidisciplinary exhibition, which explores the gaze of artists on crime.

Yet, the idea of this exhibition is due to the ex Attorney General of France, Robert Badinter. Almost 30 years after the abolition of the death penalty in France, the man who fought hard against the death penalty thought it was high time to offer a retrospective, to shed new light on the crime and its punishment, accross the time.

“I thought that art would help me to go further in my reflection about crime and its punishment. I discovered that what interests the artist, is the violation of fundamental taboos : sacrilege, sex, death“, confides Robert Badinter. If crime has inspired so many artists, it is because violence and drama are very photogenic!  Much more than love, which has no climax, no acting out… › Continue reading
