The Quartier Latin

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011 | Paris monuments, Travel Guide | No Comments

In the list of must see sights and attractions in Paris, the Latin Quarter is one of the most famous areas!

The Latin Quarter (Quartier Latin) is situated on the left bank of the Seine in Paris and has for historic center the Sorbonne. It extends on both 5th and 6th arrondissements from Saint Germain des Pres to the Jardin du Luxembourg, with lots of monuments to visit: the Pantheon, the Senate, the Lutece Arenas, the Saint Sulpice Church etc. Its name comes from the numerous universities and schools of the area where Latin language has long been spoken, since Latin was the international language of learning.

Actually, the University has had a long history here! In the twelfth century, under Philippe Auguste, Paris is already home to one of the largest university centers of the West. The University of Paris soon acquires great prestige, especially in the fields of philosophy and theology. During the events of May 1968, this district was the nerve center of various student uprisings. Today, a gentle spirit of litigation is still blowing around the social sciences and humanities faculties that are attracting a young and multicultural population made of students in law, philosophy, letters and Erasmus exchange programm.

Thus, this district is very frequented by students and teachers because of the presence of universities such as la Sorbonne, Paris II Pantheon Assas, the Jussieu Campus, Paris III Sorbonne Nouvelle, le College de France and the Sainte Genevieve’s library. There are also a lot of famous colleges: l’Ecole Normale Supérieure, les Beaux-Arts, Agro Paris Tech or high prestigious high schools: Louis Le Grand, Stanislas, Henri IV, Montaigne etc. Consequently, specialized libraries have been established in the district such as Gibert Jeune, which is a true institution for Paris!

Continuing west along the banks of the Seine, make a leap in time and follow in the footsteps of Boris Vian, jazz music and the existentialism! Saint Germain des Pres with the famous “Café de Flore” and “Café des Deux Magot“  are actually where Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and many Parisian left-wing intellectuals settle down in the 40′s. In between, the Place Saint Michel is a meeting place also well known, a few steps from the famous Rue de la Huchette and its numerous restaurants where tourists and students come together happily.

Enjoy your visit in this mythical area with an undeniable charm …

delavillecafeDe la Ville Café
Clearly visible under its multicolored hauvent on the Bonne Nouvelle Boulevard, the De La Ville Café has a one of the largest sidewalk width in Paris. With its free wifi access and a breathtaking décor, the bar attracts a trendy clientele any time of the day. We should say that the place was a maison close under Napoleon III! From that time, the place has kept a monumental staircase, a nice mosaic and a golden ceiling which put toghether with the oriental or ultra modern style of the other decoration elements, creates an amazing mix.

La Sardinelasardine
La Sardine is a small restaurant that looks like a Mediterranean Bistro, which offers a mix of tapas and french traditional cuisine. The small Place Sainte-Marthe on which it is located is only worth a detour. Straight out of a village in the South of France with its colourful luminons, its beautiful proportions and its lightly decrepit facades, the place is a totally exotic enclave in a highly urbanized arrondissement. Lovely…

Sustainable tourism in Paris

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010 | About Paris, Travel Guide | No Comments

tourismedurableLong accused of growing to the detriment of the environment, tourism has taken seriously the ecological concerns of its customers, and perfectly understood the necessity to preserve the environnement in order to ensure its survival.
Thanks to the consideration of ecological issues, Hotel business is the only service able to receive the “Ecolabel” today, and actually plays the best figure!

Just like the Hôtel Aux Ducs de Bourgogne, who has been certified in april 2010 (cf. post” Ecolabel”, 30th march 2010), hotels, campsites, B & B, mountain huts and youth hostels, can benefit from this European label, and thus demonstrate their commitment to the environment.

Waste management, reduction in water, gas, electricity consumption and CO2 emissions… the levers are many to help accomodation managers to reduce their carbon footprint.

To go further in the green wave, here is a list of bio-ecolo-trendy adresses to be tested, to combine Paris and ecology!

How to move in Paris? By bike!

station-velib1

A friendly and environmentally friendly way to move into Paris is to pick up a bike. To do so, Paris City Council has developed a concept that is now reproduced in some cities in France but also in the world: the Vélib’!

The reason of this success is simple: who does’nt know how to cycle? Open to everyone from the age of 14, Velib’s are available round the clock, 7 days a week. With one station every 300 meters, you can go out of your hotel and take a bike for a short ride into the city, until you drop it into another Vélib’ attachement point. › Continue reading
